Phillies infielder Jean Segura could be on the move this offseason according to trade rumors.

The Philadelphia Phillies reportedly lost well over $100 million last season and that means the spending will have to slow for now. The team may also be looking to shed some current salaries at a time when fans want to see the team compete for a World Series.

Veteran infielder Jean Segura is set to earn just over $14 million in 2021 and his name is now reportedly coming up in trade talks, according to Jon Heyman.

Segura could be on the move

Segura does have a no-trade clause, but did waive it back in 2018 when he was traded from Seattle to Philadelphia. The Toronto Blue Jays are one team with interest.

He is capable of playing all over the infield and would be a nice veteran addition to a team like the Blue Jays. Segura posted a 1.2 WAR in 2020 and slashed .266/.347/.422 in 50 games.

Phillies fans may now be left wondering if the team is even going to try to compete in 2021. Bryce Harper was signed and trades were made for players like Segura and J.T. Realmuto. Now it doesn’t appear the Phillies are willing to spend on Realmuto or to continue paying Segura.

Segura still has that no-trade clause and the fact he already waived it once in the past is a good sign. He may also want to get out of Philly and join a contender if he believes the goal from ownership is to strictly slash spending.

The nice thing about a trade for Segura is he remains under contract through 2022. He also has a $17 million club option in 2023, so a team that trades for him is not getting a one-year rental.

dark. Next. Phillies: 3 free agents to sign and 1 to avoid

Phillies fans have a right to be frustrated after missing the postseason once again in 2020. All the spending couldn’t end the drought and ownership may finally be changing course.
