Georgia football has postponed their game against the Vanderbilt Commodores due to COVID-19.

The SEC is committed to playing out a full slate, unlike the Big Ten or even ACC. Yet, should the game not be necessary, it will not be played. The Bulldogs can still theoretically make the SEC Championship Game, and if Florida loses and UGA wins out, the Bulldogs would play Alabama/Texas A&M in the SEC Championship Game rather than host Vandy on Dec. 19.

It’s a complicated process in a convoluted season, but one all programs are forced to deal with. SEC schools knew what they were getting into when they decided to play out their schedule despite a global pandemic. Yet, week after week, it appears some players, coaches and even athletic directors are caught off-guard.

And that’s where Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity comes in

“I don’t take things personal, but when our institution suffers, it upsets me greatly,” McGarity said. “When something effects our school, it’s extremely frustrating.”

McGarity hinted that Vanderbilt didn’t want to add another embarrassment to what’s already been a brutal season for the Commodores. Vandy recently fired former head coach Derek Mason, and are winless on the year.

“They (Georgia fans) should be angry, and we’re angry, too,” McGarity said. “It’s just extremely frustrating and extremely disappointing, especially if the game on the 19th can’t be played, and that’s what we fear.”

“Hopefully Vandy will be prepared to play (Dec. 19). It’s just so frustrating when you have coaches and players and support staff that make significant sacrifices to stay safe, and they do so, and then they have no competitive benefit other than their health,” McGarity continued.

“I’m extremely proud of the way these young men have listened and illustrated they love the game of football and they want to play. I can’t say that about everyone. If you want something bad enough you’re gonna do what you’re told to do.”

McGarity will leave his post as Georgia AD at the end of the calendar year. Safe to say he’s going out with a bang after suggesting Vandy doesn’t have the motivation to play what amounts to a meaningless game for them.

While he’s not wrong about Vanderbilt’s situation, to question the players’ willingness to perform on a big stage because of their record is a baseless accusation and mirrors the ridiculous comments made by Dabo Swinney about Florida State a few weeks ago.
