Alabama football star receiver DeVonta Smith is on pace to break the single-game record for receiving yards in a game.

Alabama receiver DeVonta Smith had seven catches for 219 yards and three touchdowns in the first half vs. LSU. He is on pace to break the FBS single-game record for receiving yards of 405 set by Troy Edwards.

The Louisiana Tech receiver was on fire in 1998 when he had 21 receptions for 405 yards and three touchdowns against No. 4 Nebraska. The 21 receptions were three shy of the record held by Jerry Rice but he set a new benchmark for receiving yards. It was thought to be a record that would never be broken, but the way passing offenses have evolved in recent years, it’s only a matter of time until it’s broken.

DeVonta Smith could break the record for receiving yards in a game

Could that fall in 2020 with Smith out to make even more history?

Smith set the all-time receiving touchdown record for the SEC earlier this season and is one shy of breaking the single-season receiving touchdown record in program history, held by Amari Cooper who had 16.

Alabama quarterback Mac Jones has had his eyes on Smith all night as LSU has had no answer for Smith who could be a top-10 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and perhaps the first receiver taken.

The only thing that could stop Smith from setting the record is if the score gets too out of hand and the backups play extensively in the second half.

Alabama leads 45-14 at halftime and if it gets even more out of control, Smith may get the entire fourth quarter to rest up.

We could be witnessing history tonight so be sure to tune in for the second half of Alabama-LSU on CBS.
