Violence was the name of the game at NXT TakeOver: War Games where it was the Undisputed Era who stood tall at the end of the night.

WWE NXT TakeOver WarGames is about two battles between teams that hate everything about each other. Two groups of women and two groups of men were set to face off in two important matches on the WWE Network. This along with three other matches were set for the card from the Capitol Wrestling Center.

The women of NXT kicked off the night as Team Shotzi Blackheart competed against Team Candice LeRae. Dakota Kai was the first participant for Team LeRae, and she had to deal with Ember Moon from Team Blackheart – the group that also had the advantage heading into the match. Kai and Moon had their own feud brewing since Moon’s return to active competition. Kai was in control, but she would soon face 2-1 odds as Blackheart was the next person in the match.

As more teammates entered the match, the violence increased, including a set of tools entering the playhouse. LeRae’s team came in with a sound strategy to keep the odds in their favor, including Indi Hartwell attacking. Shirai found her way into the match by jumping off the top of the cage with a trashcan over her body, crashing into everyone.

For nearly thirty minutes the four women battled in an intense match. The ending came when Raquel Gonzalez used one hand to power bomb Shirai through a ladder, pinning the NXT Women’s champion to give her team the victory.

Tommaso Ciampa and Timothy Thatcher both had the goal of beating the other up in their singles match, and that is exactly what they did. Thatcher would strike early, going after Ciampa’s neck over and over. That would become the story of the match, Thatcher attempting to dissect the former NXT champion.

Ciampa would not stay down forever, as be burst open Thatcher’s ear and had him locked in a nasty bulldog choke. The two continued to try to choke each other out in a variety of ways. But the end was a nasty Willow’s Bell from Ciampa while Thatcher was tied up in the ropes. Ciampa crawled into position and secured the victory.

Cameron Grimes and Dexter Lumis have been battling since Halloween but that did not stop them from tearing into each other during their strap match. Grimes tried to cheat early, but Lumis was prepared for his games. They battled all around the ring, throwing each other over the barricades and into the steel. Grimes snuck in a blindfold and slipped that over Lumis’s head to get an advantage.

Things broke down to a fist fight with both men throwing blows. The finish came when Lumis caused Grimes to fall face first into a steel chair, using that opportunity to lock in the head and arm choke. Grimes fought back but was eventually forced to submit.

Leon Ruff talked his way into a triple threat match to defend the NXT North American title against Damian Priest and Johnny Gargano. Ruff was the target early, but he wanted to show that he can hang with both men.

Ruff continued to annoy Priest so much so that Priest ended up throwing him through the barricade at ringside, resulting in Ruff being carried away to the back. Priest and Gargano continued to fight on, with neither man being able to find a win. Ruff came back into the match and broke out offense on both men.

The finish came when three men dressed as Ghostface popped up and tried to attack Priest. They were not able to do enough to stop Priest, but another appeared and hit Priest with a lead pipe. Priest used that opening to land the One Final Beat on Ruff to get the win and the title back.

The main event of the evening brought out the Undisputed Era to face Pat McAfee, Pete Dunne, Oney Lorcan and Danny Burch. Pete Dunne and Kyle O’Reilly were the first two to start the action. They did not wait to start grappling with each other in a style that would rival the action seen at the ADCC.

As more men poured into the ring, the Undisputed Era struggled to get any type of offense going, frequently getting cut off by the opposition. Adam Cole’s entrance changed things briefly for the Undisputed Era as they started to fight as a unit.

McAfee brought in a series of tables but the were turned on his team as each one of them were sent through a table of their own. McAfee was isolated and forced to fight four men on his own for a while before his team could join back in. He would not go away without a fight, even breaking out a Swanton Bomb onto the other competitors. Carnage was the word of the night as things broke down, but the end came in violent fashion. O’Reilly landed a knee off the top rope to Burch’s face, immediately pinning him and getting the win for the Undisputed Era.
