3 teams who can rescue Carson Wentz’s career
2. New England Patriots
The Patriots took a calculated flier on Cam Newton, and despite four wins in their last five games to re-enter the playoff conversation he’s hardly likely to be brought back in 2021. The idea of drafting one of the top prospects in the 2021 draft, even someone like Florida’s Kyle Trask outside the top-10 overall, fades with every mark in the win column.
Even with a lower salary cap coming, the Patriots are in a great position for 2021 ($62.5 million projected space right now, via Over The Cap). A restock of the roster, with some spending across the board, seems to be coming as a lot of other teams face tough decisions on cuts.
A reunion with Garoppolo is easy to tie New England to this offseason. But as they look at all options, trading for someone like Wentz might land on the radar. Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels staying put instead of taking a head coaching job that may come his way would be helpful in an effort to evaluate Wentz and determine if he can be fixed in a new situation. Keep in mind McDaniels seemed to be less than a staunch advocate for Newton at one point, but the Patriots signed him anyway.
When notable players are available, if only theoretically, the Patriots are hard to totally rule out. They will be in the quarterback market for 2021, and Wentz is trending toward being an option.
