With Urban Meyer ruling out Texas, will Tom Herman stick around?

Tom Herman appeared to finally be in danger of losing his job as head coach of the Texas Longhorns, as former national champion Urban Meyer was considered the favorite to replace him. This grand plan that will mercifully end the Herman era has already been squashed in record time, as Meyer himself hinted that he isn’t interested in wearing burnt orange.

Per 247sports, Meyer will stay retired from coaching due to health reasons. With one of the big-name replacements for this potential opening now ruling himself out, one has to wonder if Texas will spend $25 million and buy out Herman.

Tom Herman hasn’t closed the gap on Oklahoma and could be out

Herman has a 31-18 record as head coach of the Longhorns. He hasn’t been a complete train wreck, as he helped a Texas team that had three straight losing seasons under Charlie Strong win 10 games and win the Sugar Bowl in his second season. However, winning 10 games a year should be the expectation for a program like Texas, and Herman is falling short of those benchmarks.

Meyer would’ve been a dream hire, as his history of turning around struggling blue bloods like Florida and Ohio State shows that he has the ability to take Texas back to their Mack Brown glory days. The allure of staying retired and doing TV appeared to be too enticing for Meyer to walk away from and that decision put the Longhorns firmly in coach purgatory with Herman.

With the financial resources and program history at their disposal, Texas should be obliterating Big 12 competition, and Herman’s inability to restore Texas’ pedigree is the main factor working against him right now. Still, if Meyer and a handful of other candidates don’t show interest in the job, Longhorns fans better strap in for another season of Herman in Austin.
