Texas A&M football coach Jimbo Fisher would love to play Ohio State but recognizes it’s not possible.

Jimbo Fisher would have supported Texas A&M playing Ohio State on Saturday.

Fisher’s No. 5 Texas A&M Aggies had their game with the Ole Miss Rebels postponed due to COVID positivities on the Ole Miss side of things. The No. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes had The Game vs. the Michigan Wolverines canceled on Saturday for the same reasons regarding the Michigan program. So what if No. 5 Texas A&M were to play No. 4 Ohio State on Saturday?

While Fisher knows that is an impossibility, he did not back away from the hypothetical game in theory. Here is what he had to say on SEC This Morning with Chris Doering and Jacob Hester about his Aggies being prepared to play a team like Ohio State on such short notice.

“I think on Wednesday, I mean I think you’re being a little bit crazy with it. You know that with game preparation and to get the quality of the game you want to do – you want to go into that game for both of us, there’s a lot on the line. You’d want to be prepared for the game,” said Fisher on Wednesday morning.

“Now to play them? It doesn’t bother me to play them. I’d love to play them, play them in the playoffs. Line-up and play them. Whatever it is. I think on Wednesday it’d be a very tough thing to do for a game that would mean so much.”

This would have been as good, if not better, than Mormons vs. Mullets

The reasons this impromptu Power 5 game could not happen are obvious. The whole reason the Power 5 conferences have gone conference-only for 2020 is to have uniformity with regards to COVID-19 testing. There is also television contracts involved with both the Big Ten and the SEC. So who would be pulling a fast one over the other? Disney or FOX? That is why it is not happening.

As Fisher said, he would welcome playing Ohio State. . .in the playoff. Of course, only Ohio State or Texas A&M would make the field as the No. 4 seed. If they were to both miss out because the Clemson Tigers and the Florida Gators win their respective conference championship games, maybe the Buckeyes and the Aggies can play in the Cotton Bowl or the Fiesta Bowl or something?

While this has been a weird year for all of us, one of the best parts of the 2020 season was when a pair of Group of 5 undefeated teams met spontaneously in Greater Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Dubbed “Mormons vs. Mullets”, the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers stopped the BYU Cougars on the one-yard line as time expired on Saturday night at Brooks Stadium. It was an amazing moment.

Logistically, Texas A&M vs. Ohio State on short notice is impossible, but a boy can dream.
