College football upset alert No. 3: USC Trojans

Rank: 15 | Opponent: at UCLA Bruins | Time: Saturday, Dec. 12, 7:30 p.m. ET

After some extremely lackluster wins over Arizona State and at Arizona to kick off their 2020 season, the USC Trojans have looked much more akin to the team that many expected them to be in their most recent pair of victories. Clay Helton‘s team won by 16 at Utah and the trounced Washington State on Sunday last week.

No one should exactly mistake Washington State and Utah for being Pac-12 powerhouses, however. This USC team still has plenty of issues that are concerning. The defense is prone to be easily taken advantage of while Kedon Slovis continues to be incredibly up-and-down. So that makes a rivalry matchup with UCLA increasingly dangerous.

Don’t look now but the Bruins have started to really show something this year under Chip Kelly. Their loss at Oregon looks more suspect with each loss by the Ducks but that was also an extremely close game. Moreover, Colorado’s surge this season makes that four-point loss not look bad at all. Then UCLA has won their other three games this season.

With the way USC struggled against Arizona State, the mobility of a matured Dorian Thompson-Robinson could cause the Trojans boatloads of issues. Moreover, if UCLA gets rolling on offense, the inconsistency of the USC offense could come to roost. Throw in the rivalry aspect of this one and things could get wild in Los Angeles.
