Phillies: 3 moves Dave Dombrowski must make immediately
By Mark Powell
1. What’s the plan with the Phillies infield?
Is Jean Segura still a capable middle infielder and a decent hitter? Yes. Does Segura’s contract look worse by the day? Also yes. Both can be true, and the answer is likely that the Phillies want to ship him away for virtually nothing. It’s a tough pill to swallow, but one Dombrowski is likely willing to do due to the future dividends.
If the Phillies decide to trade Segura, they will need to replace his production in the infield and in the lineup. Philadelphia has long been connected to the likes of trade targets Francisco Lindor and Carlos Correa, and if any front office executive is trained in making a big splash on the trade market, it’s Dombrowski. I’m just saying…
The more likely option is to trade Segura and take a chance on a buy-low, high-reward free agent. Think more on the lines of a Jonathan Schoop-type talent, who at his best is a potential .300-level hitter. The Phillies would take that to the bank, especially considering it wouldn’t cost them more than, say, $7 million.
It’s not a flashy move, but if the Phillies want to save some money somewhere on their current roster, it’s here.
