Arkansas State football will reportedly hire Butch Jones as its next head coach.
Steven Godfrey of Banner Society was the first on this blockbuster head-coaching hire. Jones has spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach in Nick Saban’s Alabama Crimson Tide staff. He is best known for running the Tennessee Volunteers football program into the ground by way of redundant cliches and an inability to win the SEC East. Jones will be the main man once again.
Stadium’s Brett McMurphy reports Jones will be announced and introduced to the team tonight.
Butch Jones should have more success in a smaller conference than the SEC
The Saban method of coaching rehabilitation has yet another success story. A few years ago, Lane Kiffin was able to parlay being the Crimson Tide’s offensive coordinator to leading the Florida Atlantic Owls. Kiffin is now in year one of being in charge of the Ole Miss Rebels. Even former New Mexico Lobos disaster Mike Locksley was able to rehab enough to lead the Maryland Terrapins.
It was going to take some work to rehab Jones’ image. No amount of leadership reps can make a champion for life out of a five-star heart. Jones will be in Jonesboro and that is going to be a thing. He replaces Blake Anderson who left for the Utah State Aggies vacancy earlier in the week. Jones plans to bring former Houston Cougars head coach Major Applewhite as his offensive coordinator.
Before being over his skis in Knoxville, Jones was outstanding following in Brian Kelly’s footsteps. He replaced Kelly twice as the head coach of the Central Michigan Chippewas and the Cincinnati Bearcats before getting the Tennessee gig in 2013. Kelly has become a phenomenal coach with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, while Jones was seen as an embarrassing failure at Tennessee.
Look for Jones to get back to his roots and win a ton of games at the Group of 5 level.
