Florida’s Marco Wilson committed one of the dumbest penalties you’ll ever see in a college football game.

Florida got the third-down stop against LSU and was poised to get the ball back with about two minutes left in a tie game. Kyle Trask would have gotten the ball with a chance to keep the Gators’ College Football Playoff hopes alive with a scoring drive.

But Marco Wilson picked up the cleat of an LSU football player and heaved it down the field and was flagged for an unsportsmanlike penalty that gave new life to the reigning national champions.

The Tigers also got 15 crucial yards on top of the fresh set of downs. That proved essential as LSU was able to boot a 57-yard field goal through the fog to give LSU a 37-34 lead.

The Gators were unable to make the field goal try on the ensuing possession as time expired. The loss all but guarantees Florida will miss the College Football Playoff. If they beat Alabama in the SEC Championship Game, they would have been in.

Wilson’s penalty will go down in the history books as one of the most mind-boggling bad penalties in Florida football history. It cost them a chance at a playoff, it cost them the game, it will be forever attached to him the rest of his football career.
