The Heisman watch is tighter than ever before after Kyle Trask and Florida’s struggles opened the door for Mac Jones and DeVonta Smith in the Heisman race.

As we come down the final stretch of the 2020 college football season, it’s time for the Heisman watch to narrow its focus. While we’ve ranked the top 10 candidates for the entire year, the fact that we have reached the end game here means that it’s time to close the lens and start focusing on just the top five candidates to win the award.

What’s interesting is that those top five candidates in the Heisman race made things interesting on Saturday in Week 15. Florida quarterback Kyle Trask played his worst game of the season while Mac Jones and DeVonta Smith, though they didn’t put up wild numbers, continued to roll for Alabama. And thus, the race is now tighter than before.

Did Jones or Smith overtake Trask or did the Gators quarterback hold his spot? Just as much, who takes the other two spots in these rankings? Let’s dive into the Heisman watch yet again as we rank the top five candidates in the race after 15 weeks.

But before we do, a tip of the cap to BYU quarterback Zach Wilson, Alabama running back Najee Harris, Buffalo running back Jaret Patterson and Cincinnati quarterback Desmond Ridder, all of whom have enjoyed phenomenal years worthy of at least mentioning in the Heisman race. To the top five we go now.

Heisman watch candidate No. 5: Trevor Lawrence, QB, Clemson

Fans and voters will get to see Trevor Lawrence and the Clemson Tigers one more time before Heisman ballots must be submitted as they’ll get a rematch against Notre Dame with the ACC Championship on the line. It’s worth noting, of course, that Lawrence was not on the field for that game as he was forced to the sidelines for a couple of weeks following a positive COVID-19 test.

The fact that Lawrence is still in these rankings after that hiatus is a testament to how good he’s been in the 2020 season. In just eight games, Lawrence has completed 69.2 percent of his passes for 2,431 yards, 20 touchdowns and only three interceptions while rushing for 121 yards and six more trips into the end zone as well. He’s been a stud at every turn and, with a dominant performance in the ACC title game, he could earn his spot as a Heisman finalist.
