Iowa wide receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette scored on a long touchdown reception but injured himself during his celebration.

While the Big Ten did miss out on the annual Michigan-Ohio State matchup, they still had a rivalry game between two West division rivals. The Iowa Hawkeyes (5-2) looked to put another tally in the win column as they faced off against the Wisconsin Badgers (2-2). One player on Iowa was so hyped up to score against Wisconsin, that he might’ve overdone to his detriment.

Iowa extended their lead over Wisconsin after quarterback Spencer Petras hit a wide-open Ihmir Smith Marsette along the sidelines for a huge 53-yard touchdown reception. But before crossing the plane, the senior wide receiver decided to do a front flip into the end zone. In the process, however, Smith-Marsette landed awkwardly on his left ankle.

Smith-Marsette would immediately depart for the locker room following the touchdown, but emerged on the sidelines without his pads and sporting a walking boot on his left foot.

Smith-Marsette was having a huge game prior to the injury

While Iowa fans were celebrating the 21-7 lead, they couldn’t help but worry about Smith-Marsette, who was having himself quite the game at the expense of Wisconsin’s secondary.

The senior Hawkeye caught seven passes from Petras for 140 yards and two touchdowns. His other score came earlier in the third quarter after he made a tough contested catch in the back corner of the end zone.

It’s unknown how serious of an injury Smith-Marsette suffered, but the walking boot is never a good sign. Fans and media alike should get an update from head coach Kirk Ferentz following the game.
