Urban Meyer will come out of retirement for the perfect opportunity, which means Texas football is not the perfect opportunity.
Texas football tried to coax Urban Meyer out of retirement earlier this month but the three-time national champion coach didn’t budge. The FOX commentator weighed in on what it would take for him to leave his current jobs and return to the sidelines on the Colin Cowherd show earlier this week. In the process, Meyer eluded to the fact that Texas is not the glamorous job many make it out to be.
Urban Meyer explains what would get him to coach again
“There’s more than mornings Colin,” Meyer said in response to Cowherd asking if the coach still thinks about Saturday mornings. “You can’t do something as long as I have done it that you just feel a bit empty. I have a great spot at FOX and I love Reggie, Matt, Brady and Rob Stone. We have a great group. I’ve really absorbed that and embraced that. To say I don’t think about it, it’s every day. But it’d have to be the perfect, perfect situation and it’d have to be something that I was confident that the health issues I could overcome. Or at least prevent. So, I don’t know. At this point, I think I’m done but I learned a long time ago…I left a job once where I planned on being there and then you get a call from a better opportunity. So, I think I’m done but I would never say, I’m never done.”
Texas football is not a great job many think it is
Meyer stepped away from coaching because of health reasons on multiple occasions and while people on social media dismiss his health concerns as being valid, they are one of the leading reasons for him not pursuing any jobs.
In the case of the Texas football job, it’s a tough place to win at with oversized and unrealistic expectations. They haven’t been a sterling football program for the better part of the last 15 years. They are more like Baylor in the Big 12 than Oklahoma, who they like to compare themselves to.
In other words, Meyer knows it’s not going to be a quick-fix like it was when he took the Ohio State or Florida jobs. Certainly, he thinks he could have success at a place like Texas but it’s not the top job folks in Austin think it is. If it was, Meyer would be introduced as the new Texas football coach early next week.
