The Birds benched Carson Wentz and gave rookie quarterback Jalen Hurts the start against the visiting Saints. And he ran for 106 yards, teammate Miles Sanders rushed for 115 yards and two scores and the Birds rolled up 246 yards on the ground.

Hurts threw for 167 yards and a score to veteran Alshon Jeffery but also fumbled late in the game that opened the door for a Saints’ comeback. But Doug Pederson’s club put an end to a four-game skid.

87. . 4-9. Previous: . Carolina Panthers. 23. team

The Panthers returned to action after a week off and hosted the Broncos in a battle of 4-8 clubs. Carolina got 283 yards through the air from resourceful quarterback Teddy Bridgewater, who was sacked four times but also ran for 31 yards and one score.

Ultimately, Matt Ruhle’s defense just couldn’t make enough plays or put enough heat on Broncos’ quarterback Drew Lock, who was sacked only once and riddled the Panthers for 280 yards and four TDs.

After losses to the Buccaneers, Falcons and Saints, Vic Fangio’s club finally conquered an AFC West club by besting the Panthers in Carolina. Diontae Spencer returned a punt 83 yards for a touchdown to kick off the scoring but Brandon McManus missed the first of two PATs.

Quarterback Drew Lock finished the afternoon with 280 yards through the air and four scores – including a pair to K.J. Hamler. The Denver defense finished with four sacks.
