Dan Mullen was full of excuses, Big Ten shade after Florida choked vs LSU

Florida football coach Dan Mullen must have eaten sour grapes after losing to LSU because he took a ton of unwarranted shots at Ohio State.

Dan Mullen is the second college football coach on record, joining Dabo Swinney, to disagree with the decision the Ohio State Buckeyes (5-0) should be included in the College Football Playoff.

According to 247Sports’ Clint Buckley, Mullen isn’t for Ohio State getting a chance to play in the College Football Playoff with a much smaller sample of games. Ohio State only has only played five games so far this season. They will play the No. 14 Northwestern Wildcats (6-1) in the Big Ten Championship Game Saturday on FOX.

After Mullen’s Florida football team lost to LSU on Saturday night to end their chances at a playoff berth, Mullen was full of excuses and shade for the Buckeyes.

“I don’t have a vote on that, I’m not in the room,” Mullen said. “I know we’ve played 10 games so I guess probably the best thing to do would’ve been play less games. Because you seem to get rewarded this year for not playing this year in college football.”

Dan Mullen has only himself to blame

There is nothing wrong with coaches like Mullen and Clemson’s Swinney taking issue but taking shots when you failed to win a game against a bad LSU team doesn’t make any sense.

In theory, he has a right to be upset because his team has indeed played more games but we’re in a completely different environment with COVID-19 canceling and postponing games left and right. The Big Ten’s decision to start their season in October was going to put teams in that conference in a precarious situation.

Mullen has a point that ACC, SEC and Big 12 teams have proven that college football can be played in this public health crisis. Each of those conferences has done a great job navigating this new normal we’re facing.

He can only control what is in front of his program and that’s the SEC Championship Game with the Alabama Crimson Tide.
