Jim Harbaugh expected to sign extension to stay Michigan football coach
By Mike Luciano
Jim Harbaugh expects to be the head coach at Michigan in 2021.
The Michigan Wolverines took two massive steps back this year after a small step in the right direction in 2019, and the extremely unusual season might’ve been the only thing that many assumed would protect Jim Harbaugh from an unceremonious firing. However, based on what Harbaugh expects to go down in the coming days, Michigan remains so committed to him that they’re willing to give him a hefty new contract extension.
ESPN’s Tom VanHaaren is reporting that Harbaugh is telling prospective recruits about how he is “committed” to Michigan and expects to sign a new contract.
Jim Harbaugh had his worst season at Michigan in 2020
The coronavirus-altered season has presented plenty of challenges for all college football coaches, but Harbaugh’s performance this year was simply unacceptable. Harbaugh and the Wolverines went just 2-4, with one of those wins coming in overtime against Rutgers. With what would’ve been a pummeling at the hands of Ohio State unfortunately canceled, Harbaugh is lucky that he didn’t end up 2-5 or 1-6 on the year.
While Harbaugh has failed to make Michigan title contenders, he has dragged them back to relevancy after the Rich Rodriguez and Brady Hoke eras. Unfortunately, Harbaugh couldn’t even keep Michigan above .500, and that poor record will only continue to fire up the anti-Harbaugh crowd even more.
Harbaugh will likely be in better shape next season if the pandemic is under control and the Wolverines can right the ship. However, Harbaugh is still failing to take the Wolverines to the promised land, and his extension might not go over well in all of Ann Arbor.
