The Baltimore Ravens were called for a brutal roughing the passer penalty.

Baker Mayfield probably doesn’t deserve this kind of start treatment. While Mayfield is a former No. 1 overall pick and Heisman winner, he can definitely take a hit when called upon, especially when that tackle is as legal as they come.

Defenders in the modern NFL have a tough gig as it pertains to tackling the quarterback. There’s a very small window to make a legal hit, and it’s somewhere between the thighs and shoulder-pads of the opposing signal-caller. Yet, even when everything goes perfectly, there’s no guarantee that an official might misconstrue matters.

How is the world was that roughing the passer?

Matthew Judon is a veteran of this league. He’s by no means dirty, and knows what’s considered a legal hit, and what is not. Judon was rightfully upset after he bulled over the Browns offensive lineman on third down for a crucial hit, which would’ve otherwise ended Cleveland’s drive.

Instead, Baltimore had to rely on a Cody Parkey missed field goal to get the ball back. While the ball doesn’t lie in this case, that’s not always guaranteed. The officials nearly put points on the board for Cleveland in a game they’re already favored in, at home.

The Ravens face a tough test the remainder of the way. They don’t need to face the zebras as well.
