Did Aaron Rodgers just open the door for Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen in the MVP race?

Aaron Rodgers made history on Saturday night, but his performance wasn’t exactly inspiring.

Aaron Rodgers connected with Robert Tonyan for a one-yard touchdown in the first quarter to give the Green Bay Packers a 7-0 lead. It also marked Rodgers’ status in history books for here on out.

With the score, the 37-year-old quarterback became the first player in league history to finish with three seasons of 40-plus touchdowns. Rodgers, who currently leads the league in touchdowns, was all but set to claim another MVP title with a game against a lackluster defense.

That is, so he thought.

After the third drive, Green Bay’s offense took a step back. Yes, while Aaron Jones tallied a two-touchdown game, Rodgers’ role was limited in a 24-16 victory over the Carolina Panthers.

The race for the league’s top honor could have been won Saturday night. Instead, the door is wide open for Patrick Mahomes to reclaim the top spot. Against the New Orleans Saints, the 2018 MVP winner can show why despite a rough outing in Week 14, Sunday is where it all returns to normal.

If not, there is another name that should enter the mix. It’s time to add Buffalo Bills Josh Allen to group chat until proven otherwise.

Could Rodgers’ blunder open the door for Allen or Mahomes?

Records are meant to be broken, a feat Rodgers completed on Saturday night. The reality is, he wasn’t the only player to do so.

Allen, who has surged into Tier 1 quarterback status for 2020, rewrote the storyline on his career thanks to a surging season. With the 49-19 victory over the Denver Broncos, Allen broke the 25-year streak of Buffalo failing to claim the AFC East title.

It’s more than that for Allen. Saturday marked his seventh 300-yard passing game of the season. It also became his seventh without an interception. Allen’s turnover ratio has plummeted while his completion percentage is at an all-time high (68.6 percent).

Mahomes is coming off his worst performance of the season against one of the league’s best in causing turnovers. Throwing three interceptions and taking slack for a 30-yard sack, somehow the Chiefs found a way to win against the Miami Dolphins on the road.

The reason? Mahomes.

Mahomes leads the NFL in passing yards (4,208), is third in touchdowns (33), and only has five interceptions. Meanwhile, his loaded arsenal can find avenues to help pick up yards and keep drives alive in his favor.

Who else remembers when Mahomes needed 75 seconds to ruin the Las Vegas Raiders season? A great game against the league’s No .2 defense likely fuels fire for fans to argue who’s the front-runner for the title.

No matter how you look at it, there’s a case for all three entering Week 16. A bad showing from Mahomes likely knocks him down a peg while a good one pushes him up. Meanwhile, one has to give credit to Allen and his ability to overcome every obstacle, including the countless doubters.

Rodgers could have locked up history and the MVP race all in one night. Instead, it will be a wild race as the trio makes the final turn on the 2020 season.
