Rashard Higgins of the Cleveland Browns is in a similar situation as the receiver discussed on the last slide Keke Coutee. In Higgins’ situation, his role in the offense jumped due to much more unfortunate circumstances though. His spot on the depth chart moved up due to Odell Beckham Jr.’s season-ending injury.
Although, even before the injury that Beckham sustained, Higgins seemed to have some chemistry with Baker Mayfield. He had back-to-back weeks with touchdowns in Week 5 and Week 6 prior to Beckham’s injury in Week 7. In Mayfield’s rookie season in 2018, Higgins had his best statistical year.
From Week 7 to Week 14, Higgins caught 26 balls on 38 targets for 415 yards and two scores. In Week 7, he had 110 yards on six catches, and in Week 13 he went for 95 yards with six more catches and a touchdown.
Replicating that sort of a day seems to have a high potential in Week 16 when the Browns travel to New York to play the Jets.
This is a defense that has allowed a lot of points, and with a secondary full of young talent, the Jets have also had a tough time defending opponent wideouts. Therefore, things indicate a favorable matchup for Higgins this week.
The Browns do love to build everything the team does offensively off the run, meaning those running backs could take a lot of scoring chances. Also, Jarvis Landry is that short-yardage, clutch down target for Mayfield. Even with those factors, Higgins is a big-play waiting to happen on play-action, and he could see a lot of targets while the Jets try to take Landry away.
