As trade speculation surrounds the Cubs, Kris Bryant is an easily rumored target for the Mets. But very earl in the offseason, Joel Sherman of the New York Post offered the idea they’d trade for Darvish and pair him with Jacob deGrom to form an enviable 1-2 atop the starting rotation.
New owner Steve Cohen is ready to open the coffers, and it’s notable the Mets chose James McCann to fill a void a catcher rather than J.T. Realmuto. Pursuits of George Springer and/or Trevor Bauer in free agency became more palatable immediately.
But if a pursuit of Bauer falls short, as he is open to almost any suitor at this point, the Mets will still have a need for starting pitching. Japanese right-hander Tomoyuki Sugano is reportedly on their radar, Marcus Stroman is back after opting out of the 2020 season and Noah Syndergaard is slated to return in June from Tommy John surgery. A move to trade for someone may be on the radar for the Mets, if only as a backup plan to free agent pursuits.
The Mets don’t have a top-end farm system to deal from, but they do have some solid prospects along with major league talent that has cost-controlled years left. If they entertain a deal for Darvish, here’s how an offer to the Cubs might look.
