The New England Patriots are experiencing something in 2020 that they haven’t experienced since 2008, and that’s missing the playoffs. That was expected considering their roster turnover in free agency and opt-outs due to the coronavirus pandemic. New England’s defense hasn’t been as dominant as in year’s past, but the secondary was solid. The star of the defensive backfield hasn’t been Stephon Gilmore. Rather, that distinction belongs to J.C. Jackson.

Jackson actually leads the league in takeaways with 11, coming on eight interceptions (second-most in NFL) and three fumble recoveries. Perhaps most impressive is the fact that Jackson limited opposing quarterbacks to a 57.8 completion percentage and 59.6 passer rating. Yet, that wasn’t good enough for the third-year defensive back.

The three corners representing the AFC are Gilmore, Xavien Howard of the Miami Dolphins and Marlon Humphrey of the Baltimore Ravens. Howard is an understandable choice, considering he leads the league with nine interceptions on the year. But you can argue putting Jackson in the starting lineup over Gilmore, who has just one interception and three passes defended to his credit.
