Georgia football linebacker Jermaine Johnson transferring to Florida State

Jermaine Johnson will play his last year of college football with the Florida State Seminoles.

After two years of playing for Kirby Smart’s Georgia football team, linebacker Jermaine Johnson is transferring to Florida State University.

Florida State football fans should be excited about landing the Georgia Bulldogs’ second-best pass-rusher behind only Azeez Ojulari this offseason. Johnson initially went the junior college route before agreeing to play for the Dawgs in 2019. With one more year’s worth of eligibility remaining, Johnson looks to be a reason Mike Norvell’s Florida State Seminoles get back on track.

Will Jermaine Johnson provide the defensive spark Florida State has needed?

Though playing time and more increased pass-rushing role are certainty coming at Florida State for Johnson, he will be playing for an ACC blue-blood program that has not been a top-tier one for the last half decade. Norvell won prolifically in his previous role with the Memphis Tigers, but did not have the same success in his first year in Tallahassee. 2021 must be better than 2020 for him.

While Florida State does not have to contend for an ACC Atlantic crown vs. the division rival Clemson Tigers, the ‘Noles need to get to a bowl game and push for a top-25 ranking at some point in 2021. It will take some time, but if Norvell is indeed the right head coach for the program, we will see the Seminoles pop in year two under him. Adding Johnson makes the defense better.
