Steelers rally for hopeful win, clinch AFC North title
By Mark Powell
After 3.5 dreadful games of football, the Steelers rallied for a decisive second half and win over the Colts.
With it, they’ve won the AFC North over the Cleveland Browns — though they would’ve done so anyway thanks to Kevin Stefanski and Co.’s untimely loss to the New York Jets. Pittsburgh still has plenty of holes to fill before the AFC Playoffs, but one comeback win, at the very least, can get the bad taste of three straight losses out of their mouths. In particular, a defeat at the hands of the dreadful Cincinnati Bengals just last Monday night was the worst yet.
The Steelers offense awoke at the perfect time, with Ben Roethlisberger connecting on multiple deep passes to open up the air attack. It was a sight for sore eyes in the Steel City, and something Pittsburgh must feature at times should they hope to make any sort of postseason run.
Better late than never for Mike Tomlin’s group
Tomlin and Roethlisberger have preached patience, as these veterans have been to war time and time again. For Big Ben, 17 seasons have thrown just about every scenario his way, but he looked utterly bewildered after adjustments made post-Cincinnati meltdown did little to help the Steelers’ offense in the first half.
The first drive of the second half was more of the same, and a long series of plays thereafter ended with a turnovers on downs at the goal-line. It wasn’t until midway through the third quarter that the Steelers found paydirt, and started a comeback that would shock even themselves.
Pittsburgh clinched the division with the victory, and can secure either the No. 2 or No. 3 seed next weekend depending on their game against Browns, who will be vying for a playoff spot themselves.
Winning does not cure all for the Steelers, but it’s a step in the right direction after a month of reports as to their untimely demise.
