Graham Mertz threw one touchdown for Wisconsin. . .and broke one Duke’s Mayo Bowl trophy.

The only way to celebrate winning the inaugural Duke’s Mayo Bowl is to break the dang trophy, just like Wisconsin football star Graham Mertz did on Wednesday afternoon.

The Wisconsin Badgers won with defense over the Wake Forest Demon Deacons at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte. Though the Badgers defense picked off Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman four times, the only two things we will remember from this game was head coach Paul Chryst not getting a mayonnaise Gatorade bath and Mertz shattering some sacred crystal.

Do not expect Wisconsin to play in the Mayo Bowl next year

Admittedly, this was a down year for the Wisconsin football team. Usually, Chryst’s bunch contends for Big Ten West division crowns, only to be Ohio State cannon fodder in the Big Ten Championship. With guys like Mertz returning to Madison next season, Wisconsin is more likely to be playing in a New Year’s Six bowl in 2021 than a return trip to Bank of America Stadium.

Since dousing the winning head coach in some savory, lemon-flavored deliciousness was apparently not happening, why not start new traditions by having the winning team’s starting quarterback spike the crystal trophy into the locker room carpet? David Tepper and the Carolina Panthers may not love that, but traditions are traditions for so many important reasons.

Let’s hope this is the signature fumble of Mertz’s promising Wisconsin football career.
