DeVonta Smith is putting on a show at AT&T Stadium.

Smith has separated himself as the best receiver in college football this season by a wide margin, especially with Ja’Marr Chase sitting out the campaign. While it’s still a toss-up whether he’ll be the first wide receiver selected this April, Smith’s route-running ability is unrivaled throughout college football, as he provides Mac Jones with a wide 6-1 frame on a regular basis. Smith’s third touchdown of the night (as of this writing) was a work of art in itself, as he taught a course in route-running to a front-row Notre Dame audience.

Just before turning towards the pylon, Smith opened up his hips just enough to get the Notre Dame defensive back to bite inside. He then quickly turned to the outside, and formed a sliver of distance between himself and the boundary. The result was a routine that would make a ballerina jealous.

Smith will be a hot commodity in the NFL Draft

Chase and Smith have separated themselves as the top two targets come April, and the latter’s stock continues to rise by the game. Many teams near the top of the board in need of weapons will give Smith a legitimate look, and rightly so. He’s in the running for the Heisman Trophy for a reason.

As talented as his quarterback is, it’s tough to tell where Jones would be without a go-to target like Smith leading the way. And this receiving corps could be even better had Jaylen Waddle not been injured midseason.

The time for this argument isn’t now, but the 2020-21 version of the Tide may be the most talented in team history, especially if they keep up this level of production.
