Jalen Hurts put Carson Wentz on the bench to end the 2020 season, but Doug Pederson thinks Wentz may return the favor in 2021.

Carson Wentz’s time as the starting quarterback for the Eagles may not be over after all. It’s clear that his head coach, Doug Pederson, believes Wentz has a strong chance to put Jalen Hurts back on the bench in 2021.

Pederson insists the Eagles’ offseason will be “geared towards getting things fixed” at the quarterback position. He also is on record as still having a “ton of confidence” in Wentz. At the very least, Philadelphia fans who believe Hurts is a lock to start next season as the team’s starting quarterback need to think again.

If Wentz is going to regain his starting position he needs to eliminate the interceptions that plagued him in 2020. He still leads the NFL in picks despite being benched three weeks ago in favor of Hurts. One of Pederson’s biggest tasks heading into next season is finding a way to build an offense that does not take quite as many chances with the football down the field.

Will Carson Wentz be the Eagles starting quarterback in 2021?

Pederson’s decision as to who will enter next year as his starting quarterback may depend on the personnel the team is able to put around the position this offseason. Massive injuries to the offensive line brought Wentz under serious fire in 2020. That made going to Hurts, a more mobile quarterback, a wise decision. It’s possible Wentz’s production can increase if Philadelphia can provide him adequate protection moving forward.

It’s also fair for Eagles fans to expect a roster overhaul at the wide receiver position. DeSean Jackson and Alshon Jeffery are unlikely to return in 2021. Jalen Reagor will be expected to assume a much larger role heading into his second season as a pro. Adding a couple of other young receivers to grow alongside him will be a priority for the Eagles front office through either free agency or the draft.

No matter what, expect the quarterback battle between Wentz and Hurts to dominate the offseason and preseason headlines in Philadelphia. Unless the Eagles find a trade partner for Wentz, Pederson will always be tempted to go back to him as the team’s starter. Hurts may need to wait for a coaching change before he seizes the starting spot for good.
