Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney ranked Ohio State at No. 11 in his Coaches Poll and that move backfired in the Sugar Bowl.
Dabo Swinney gave Ohio State all the bulletin-board material they needed for the Sugar Bowl when the Clemson head coach ranked the Buckeyes at No. 11 in his Coaches Poll.
He didn’t back off his ranking in the lead-up to the Sugar Bowl claiming he didn’t think Ohio State played enough games to warrant such a lofty ranking and inclusion in the College Football Playoff.
We’ll have to remember that next time Clemson is ranked No. 1 in the preseason Top 25 or ranked anywhere before playing double-digit games. Somehow, Swinney thought his quarterback Trevor Lawrence should win the Heisman despite playing three fewer games than Alabama’s DeVonta Smith and Mac Jones, the two leading candidates to win the coveted award. The hypocrisy is nothing new for Swinney, but college football fans and media didn’t let him off the hook after the Buckeyes obliterated his Tigers to end their season and hopes of another national championship.
