Dabo Swinney is not backing down from all the trash he talked about Ohio State leading up to the Sugar Bowl.

Those who believe in bulletin board material and added motivation had a close eye on Ohio State leading up to Friday night’s Sugar Bowl. The opponent was Clemson, led of course by outspoken head coach Dabo Swinney.

Swinney ranked the Buckeyes No. 11 in his final Coaches Poll of the season and made it clear he didn’t think they played enough games to be ranked in the top-10. Then the Buckeyes routed the Tigers by a final score of 49-28 to advance to the National Championship Game vs. Alabama.

The Tigers coach still stands by what he said, even after the blowout loss to a team he ranked No. 11.

Swinney’s logic is that he believes a team had to play at least nine games to qualify for the top-10 in his poll. That seems a bit arbitrary given the challenges faced this season.

However, he still acknowledges Ohio State was good enough to beat Clemson. So the poll seems to be petty at best.

One interesting point Swinney makes is that his poll did not give the Buckeyes any added motivation. It would be fun to hear what the Buckeyes players and coaches have to say about that. Friday night’s broadcast showed a sign in the Ohio State workout facility showcasing the score from last year’s loss to Clemson. That team is all about finding extra motivation.

Clemson got embarrassed in their biggest game of the year and Swinney did not make any excuses. Next time he may just want to prepare for a big game and stop talking about how undeserving the other team is beforehand. A school may just hang up a quote of his to give their players that added push.
