Adam Gase was officially relieved of his duties as the New York Jets head coach on Sunday after finishing the season 2-14.

The New York Jets are officially done with Adam Gase.

On Sunday night, the franchise dropped a statement from chairman and CEO Chris Johnson announcing the head coaching change.

“While my sincere intentions are to have stability in our organization — especially in leadership positions — it is clear the best decision for the Jets is to move in a different direction,” Johnson wrote.

Johnson also acknowledged the team has “not been good enough.” That’s for sure.

Adam Gase never got things going with the Jets

The Jets won their only two games of the season in back-to-back weeks before being beaten by the New England Patriots 28-14 to finish the campaign. Those two wins, which kept the team from having the No. 1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, were far from enough to help Gase keep his job.

Gase’s Jets just never seemed to progress. Quarterback Sam Darnold, the No. 3 selection in the 2018 NFL Draft, struggled in an offense that couldn’t get the pass or the run to work in their favor. As a former offensive coordinator, the major issues reflected poorly on Gase.

On defense, things weren’t much better. The Jets gave up 28.5 points per game to their opponents in 2020, which was a major step back from 2019.

The Jets’ decision to put their franchise in Gase’s hands should be questioned. He served as Miami’s head coach for three years, leading the Dolphins to the playoffs in Year 1. However, he had a losing record in the two subsequent seasons and was promptly fired with a 23-25 record.

New York will need to do much better than that this time around as they search for the right coach to pull the team out of its current mediocrity.
