Alabama football fans react to DeVonta Smith winning Heisman Trophy
Alabama football fans were thrilled for star receiver DeVonta Smith winning the Heisman Trophy and congratulated him on social media.
The Heisman Trophy recently has been seen as an award for quarterbacks, but Alabama receiver DeVonta Smith bucked the trend to win. Smith is the first wide receiver since Desmond Howard (fourth receiver overall) in 1991 and the first non-quarterback since Derrick Henry to win the Heisman since 2015.
Smith’s victory gives Alabama their third Heisman Trophy winner in school history, joining Henry and running back Mark Ingram.
This past season, Smith hauled in 105 passes for 1,641 yards along with 20 touchdowns. All those numbers led the nation. Against Notre Dame in the Rose Bowl, Smith had seven catches for 130 yards and three touchdowns to be named the game MVP.
Alabama fans will recall Smith’s touchdown in the national championship against Georgia back in 2018 that gave the Crimson Tide their fifth National Championship under head coach Nick Saban. Smith will now have the opportunity to bring a sixth championship back to Tuscaloosa under Saban’s tenure when the Tide take on the Ohio State Buckeyes in Miami for the National Championship on Jan. 11.
Smith will be heading to the NFL after this season where he projects to be taken among the first 10 picks.
