Ohio State football wins on the field and on Twitter as college football’s top account

The Ohio State football program dominates on the gridiron, as well as on Twitter.

As Ryan Day’s Ohio State Buckeyes get ready for the 2021 National Championship Game on Monday night, they are bestowed with another honor of having the most improved Twitter engagement in the last calendar year, according to Skullsports.

The Ohio State football program was instrumental in helping get the Big Ten back on the field after the conference initially canceled the season. Thousands of Twitter engagements came from the offseason, including quarterback Justin Fields posting his desire to return to play which was retweeted by the account.

Even though the Buckeyes only played five regular-season games and a conference championship that had skeptics like Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney questioning their inclusion, they were able to defeat Swinney’s Tigers in the Sugar Bowl.

Next up will be the juggernaut No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide in the national title bout on Jan. 11.

Several thousand more engagements came this week after rival Michigan signed Jim Harbaugh to a contract extension. The Ohio State football Twitter account liked the tweet from Bleacher Report announcing the move, which set off a viral firestorm.

Does Ohio State have a chance to upset Alabama in Miami?

For Ohio State to knock off the Crimson Tide in Miami, Fields will have to play another perfect game. While he is on the mend after sustaining a crushing blow from Clemson linebacker James Skalski in the Sugar Bowl, Fields cannot struggle if Ohio State wants any hope of hanging with Alabama. He must find a way to keep pace with Heisman Trophy finalist Mac Jones Monday.

It is not going to be easy, but Ohio State is certainly trending up. The Buckeyes have three signature wins on the season over the division rival Indiana Hoosiers, the Northwestern Wildcats in the Big Ten Championship Game and Clemson in the national semifinals. Should Ohio State pull off another monumental upset, you know that Twitter will be there to go through all the emotions.

Ohio State resonated better than any college football program on Twitter this season.
