QB. Jameis Winston. player. 15. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. New Orleans Saints. 1

It is past time for the Steelers to adequately address their backup quarterback spot. Roethlisberger’s injury ruined the team’s 2019 season. The franchise was a bit fortunate that their starting quarterback stayed so healthy during their 2020 campaign.

The good news for Pittsburgh is that they have lots of choices to make to fill that void this offseason. A trade for a distressed asset like Sam Darnold would make a lot of sense. There’s also a chance the Steelers could look to the draft to find their next franchise signal-caller.

Signing Winston in free agency would represent a middle-of-the-road gamble. He has the talent to be a high-level starter, but his penchant for interceptions correctly cost him his job with the Buccaneers. It’s impossible to know whether or not a season under Sean Payton’s watchful eye has cured Winston of his turnover sins.

At the very least, Tomlin seems like the sort of strong-minded coach who can help convince Winston to tune out the noise and focus on football. A short-term deal that gives him a chance to win the starting job after Roethlisberger either retires or fails to play at a satisfactory level would represent a proactive gamble for everyone involved.

The Steelers might be mocked for signing Winston this offseason, but it’s a move that could prove all the doubters wrong in the end. Betting on big-time talent is always a smart chance to take in the NFL.
