1. Trey Lance, Quarterback, North Dakota State

In sharp contrast to Jones, Lance is a quarterback prospect who has a wide range of potential outcomes as a pro. He could flame out and be out of the NFL by the time his rookie contract expires. He also could grow into a high-level starter after a year or two of high-level coaching.

The problem with him going to the Bears at No. 20 is that they aren’t a team that can afford to be patient with a quarterback they draft in Round 1. Rushing Lance onto the field as a rookie would be a huge mistake. It’s the type of rush job that could ruin his career and get a coaching staff fired.

Remember, Lance is a quarterback who only threw 30 passes in 2020 due to his season’s truncated schedule due to COVID-19. That will make it even more difficult for him to quickly transition from the Missouri Valley Conference to the NFL. He desperately needs a season or two to sit behind a quality veteran.

In the end, Lance is a boom or bust prospect that could turn into a stroke of genius for a team that drafts him in the back half of Round 1. The Bears just can’t afford to invest the kind of time required to get the most out of him. If Chicago gambles on him at No. 20 it could turn out poorly for everyone involved.
