What will the Seahawks do now that Brian Schottenheimer is gone?
With Brian Schottenheimer gone, the Seattle Seahawks will have to find a new plan on offense.
Pete Carroll was certain that his entire staff would be back for the 2021 NFL season. Instead, he pulled an audible at the last second.
The Seattle Seahawks and offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer have parted ways after three seasons together. According to reports, Seattle was said the departure was due to citing “philosophical differences” that didn’t correlate.
Following the team’s 30-20 loss in the Wild Card Round to NFC West rival Los Angeles, it felt as if Carroll and quarterback Russell Wilson threw Schottenheimer to the wolves for his play-calling. Then again, the past few games have seen struggles in the second half to close things out.
Carroll cited earlier this week he hopes to “establish the run” more in 2021. Seattle ranked 12th in rushing this season, averaging 123 yards per game and scoring 15 touchdowns.
The larger question will be how can they correct the deep ball issues? Seattle’s second-half debacle was in large part due to Wilson’s inability to attack downfield.
So, who should be the next person to step up?
Seattle needs a balanced attack that focuses on the run
Finding a balance will be something to look for, so expect Carroll to go after something that could win on both the ground and through the air. Coordinators on teams looking for new head coaches could be looking for a fresh start elsewhere.
A close name to watch for would be Los Angeles Chargers offensive coordinator Shane Steichen. The passing attack with rookie quarterback Justin Herbert finished 6th in passing and 18th rushing. Los Angeles did finish 9th in total offense altogether.
The 35-year-old Steichen was tasked with fixing the minor mechanics that Herbert struggled with following the firing of Ken Whisenhunt. Herbert became the face of the rookie class after setting a new rookie quarterback touchdown record with 31 scores.
Another name to watch for would be Chargers’ quarterback coach Pep Hamilton, who also has experience as an offensive coordinator during his days at the University of Michigan.
Seattle’s biggest concern might be replacing the rushing attack this offseason. Both Chris Carson and Carlos Hyde will enter free agency come March and could be looking for lucrative deals. With little to spend in cap space, John Schneider will need to be savvy adding another name in the backfield to pair with former first-round pick Rashaad Penny.
Schottenheimer is well-respected in the NFL and should receive another chance with a new team. However, should the rushing attack become the staple plan, Carroll’s plan best work with whomever he chooses to hire.
