How the Jets can make an offer the Texans can’t refuse on Deshaun Watson

The Houston Texans might have to trade Deshaun Watson, but this pick up from the New York Jets could be worth it.

By now, the Deshaun Watson situation with the Houston Texans is turning into a best-selling novel. From the moment he was told his voice would “matter” until now, it’s only gotten worse every second of the way.

Terrible for the Texans’ future? Sure. Great for Twitter? Beyond belief.

Watson now apparently wants out of Houston. Many believe he has played his final snap with the Texans. The problem there is what must be offered to make Houston trade him. Unlike other players who could be made available, Watson’s a top-five quarterback in the NFL and is only 25.

Teams live or die by the quarterback position, meaning the price for him will be well over the market value.

For the New York Jets, they could have enough ammunition to swing a deal that even Nick Caserio couldn’t refuse this offseason.

The Jets would trade a hefty draft capital for Watson

NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah recently came up with an offer that does benefit Houston. The Jets would send the No.2 selection in April’s draft, plus their first-round picks in 2022 and 2023. Third-year quarterback Sam Darnold would also be made available in some form.

Why does this look like a win for both teams? The Jets swindled the Seattle Seahawks out of a pair of first-round picks for star safety Jamal Adams. That means even if New York would send early selections in 2021 and 2022, they still would be able to add talent in Seattle’s draft position.

New York’s hiring of Robert Saleh also could allow Watson to waive his no-trade clause. According to multiple reports, the former San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator was on the shortlist of names for the Texans to interview. Instead, the phone never rang his way and now, he’ll be in gang green.

Houston would have the option to add a top-tier tackle should Darnold come to NRG Stadium or even trade back to add more picks with the No. 2 spot. Add in four likely early selections over the next three seasons between New York and their own first-round picks, and it does make sense.

If Caserio were to trade Watson, he’d have to garner back more than just a few picks. With the deal in place, Houston could see if Darnold would be the future while building on both sides of the ball.
