Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Beinemy seemed to be the hottest name on the market this offseason. Now, he could be returning to the Kingdom in 2021.

When the NFL head coaching hire process began, Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy seemed to be the top name on the market. Three years, a Lombardi Trophy and an MVP quarterback in Patrick Mahomes later, what’s not to like about what he brings to the table?

The AFC Divisional Round will come to a close Sunday afternoon when the Chiefs play host to the Cleveland Browns. Bieniemy has yet to be named a head coach by any of the seven teams with open vacancies. That might be the case when the season comes to a close as well.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, he said on Sunday’s postseason countdown that its bleak Bienemy takes a job this offseason. Many spots where the 51-year-old has already interviewed have found their head coaches and only a handful of spots remain.

Are there problems with Bieniemy’s interview process?

Bieniemy spent the Chiefs’ bye week interview with the New York Jets, Jacksonville Jaguars, Detroit Lions and Atlanta Falcons for their open roles. The Jets agreed to terms with Robert Saleh while Urban Meyer returns to coaching in Duval. Arthur Smith is taking over in Atlanta and Dan Campbell appears to be the front-runner for the Lions.

Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll is expected to interview for the Los Angeles Chargers job against Bieniemy following his departure. In the end, the coordinator that’s eliminated first might be getting the job due to time restraints. And while winning another Super Bowl is great, the plan is to become a head coach at some point in their careers.

The Houston Texans might be Bieniemy’s only chance of becoming a head coach in 2021. The team requested to interview him following the backlash surrounding the Deshaun Watson outcry over the past few weeks.

However, would Bieniemy be smart to remain in Kanas City instead of heading down to NRG Stadium? According to Schefter, Houston has become the most undesirable position in the NFL due to the power struggle up top.

Bieniemy has earned his chance to lead a team. If NFL franchises want to go a different direction? So be it. Just understand if the Chiefs continue to win, it’s likely due to Bieniemy remaining on staff.
