This Chad Henne stat will blow your mind after wild Chiefs win
By Mike Luciano
Chad Henne’s scramble was as improbable a play as we’ve seen all year.
Just when things started to look grim for the Kansas City Chiefs following Patrick Mahomes’ unceremonious exit from their playoff game against the Cleveland Browns, aging backup quarterback Chad Henne overcame a horrible interception and made enough clutch plays to help the Chiefs advance to the AFC Championship Game against the Buffalo Bills. Henne’s 13-yard scamper on third and 14, followed by a quick completion to Tyreek Hill to ice the game, was one of the most unlikely potential outcomes for that scenario given Henne’s history.
In the six seasons combined before he relief appearance yesterday, Henne had totaled -6 rushing yards, per FanSided’s Matt Verderame, on account of his immobility and the fact he was often only in the game for kneel-downs near the end. His 13-yard scramble was very much out of character.
Chad Henne defied the odds and played the game of his life
Henne, a former second-round pick out of Michigan, failed to live up to the hype in the NFL, failing to become a franchise quarterback in Miami before also disappointing in his comeback stint in Jacksonville.
Henne, who has leapfrogged Matt Moore on the depth chart this season and started in a Week 17 loss against the Los Angeles Chargers, might need to gear up for his first start in a meaningful game in years if Mahomes doesn’t progress through the concussion protocol. While the odds are stacked against him, Henne essentially won a playoff game with his legs and accuracy, so he has proven that he can dig deep for a little something extra.
No one is expecting Henne to perform like Mahomes, but Reid will expect him to make enough timely throws to pull the upset off if Mahomes is unable to get suited up in time
