Colin Cowherd’s take on Patrick Mahomes and the AFC title game is crazy

On Tuesday, FOX Sports radio host Colin Cowherd suggested the NFL delay the AFC Championship Game if Patrick Mahomes isn’t cleared to play.

The Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills are scheduled to play the AFC Championship Game at 6:40 p.m. ET on Sunday afternoon.

However, Colin Cowherd isn’t for the time and date to remain permanent if it means no Patrick Mahomes.

Cowherd said the following during his show, The Herd with Colin Cowherd, on Tuesday morning:

“We want Mahomes against Josh Allen, right? That’s reasonable. I’m sitting here thinking this morning, if I’m the NFL, Patrick Mahomes is going through protocol. I find the day Patrick Mahomes can play, that’s when we play. Why not?”

Of course, the Chiefs are waiting on their star quarterback to clear the concussion protocol after being hit by Cleveland Browns linebacker Mack Wilson in the third quarter of their 22-17 Divisional round win last weekend.

Mahomes was woozy in his attempt to stand before wobbling to the sideline with help. Minutes later, he sprinted into the locker room but was not cleared for return. This week, Mahomes has to clear the five steps baked into the protocol, and if he does, would be eligible to play come Sunday night against the Bills.

Ultimately, there’s no chance this is happening. The Bills would go insane and rightfully so, as would the rest of the league which would forever expect the same treatment. The NFL isn’t setting this precedent. A game has never been delayed due to a player being unavailable, and it’s a safe bet one never will going forward.
