Patrick Mahomes will be the x-factor for the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, but things are trending to him playing.

Patrick Mahomes will need to be on the field this upcoming Sunday for the Kansas City Chiefs should they hope to win. The conference leaders will be playing in their third-consecutive AFC Championship game, this time hoping to take down the Buffalo Bills.

Although not out of the woods yet, things are trending in the right direction for the superstar quarterback to be back in action in time for ultimate showdown.

According to reports from ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Mahomes cleared “some big steps” to return to action, yet still remains in the NFL’s concussion protocol. However, barring any setbacks, the hope is he can return to the field by Wednesday for practice.

A potential concussion won’t be the only thing Mahomes has dealt with this week. Another report from Schefter confirms the 2018 MVP is dealing with a toe issue, though Chiefs coach Andy Reid does not believe it will effect his status for Sunday.

Mahomes trending in the right direction is positive news for Kansas City

Mahomes left during Sunday’s AFC Divisional Round outing against the Cleveland Browns following a hit by linebacker Mack Wilson. He would not return, forcing backup Chad Henne to close things out.

Kansas City found a way to hold on to the 22-17 victory thanks to a critical fourth-down play from the backup quarterback. With inches to go, Henne found Tyreek Hill to seal the game.

Even if in a limited role for Kansas City, Mahomes’ presence on the field will keep the Chiefs in the right mindset. The last time the Chiefs and Bills’ met, Josh Allen threw for a mere 122 yards but did score a pair of touchdowns. Mahomes finished 21-of-26 for 225 yards and two scores.

Kansas City will have a chance to prove they are the best team in the conference once again. So long as Mahomes passes the test, things will be playing in their favor.
