Tennessee squares off with Florida in a crucial SEC matchup.

The SEC hasn’t gotten a ton of attention nationally but there are some interesting teams to keep track of in the conference. One of them is Tennessee, where a stout defensive unit has the Volunteers off to a 10-1 start and ranked no. 6 in the latest AP polls this week.

Rick Barnes’ team features a well-balanced offense as well, headlined by Oregon transfer Victor Bailey Jr, who leads the team in scoring with 12.3 points per game. The heart and soul of Tennessee’s team has to be senior guard Yves Pons, the reigning SEC Player of the Year who has been the glue behind this Volunteers lineup.

Tennessee hits the road here for a tricky matchup against Florida, which is treading water in the SEC but remains a dangerous out. The course of the Gators’ season was undeniably altered after star guard Keyontae Johnson collapsed on the court at Florida State with medical tests revealing a heart condition that will sideline him for the remainder of the season.

Florida has had to rediscover its identity without Johnson and that process has been ongoing with some mixed results. A tough schedule has seen the Gators drop three out of their last four games but they are dangerous in Gainesville, which is where this matchup will take place.

Florida’s signature victory this season came at home against LSU, one of the SEC’s top programs and a likely tournament team. If Tennessee isn’t careful here the Gators are more than capable of springing another upset and bolstering their tournament resume in the process.
