Eric Bieniemy said he’d like to be a head coach, but his focus remains on the Kansas City Chiefs and the AFC Championship Game.

On Thursday, a head coaching vacancy was filled, and it wasn’t Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy. The Philadelphia Eagles hired Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Nick Sirianni as their new sidelines boss, leaving the Houston Texans as the only team with a head coaching opening.

It’s unknown if Houston will opt to hire Bieniemy, even with quarterback Deshaun Watson banging on the table for him.

During a media call on Thursday, Bieniemy said he would love to be a head coach in the NFL, but stressed that his focus right now is on the Chiefs and preparing for the AFC Championship Game against the Buffalo Bills.

Bieniemy taking it all in stride

Bieniemy has been in the spotlight of the coaching carousel for the past three years. He’s interviewed for a majority of the vacancies in that span, but never received a job offer. Bieniemy has taken over the offensive coordinator position previously held by Matt Nagy and thrived calling the plays for the best offense in the league. Those three words need to be italicized for effect.

This coaching cycle, the Detroit Lions hired New Orleans Saints assistant head coach Dan Campbell despite his lack of play-calling experience. The same can be said about Sirianni, who hasn’t called offensive plays under head coach Frank Reich. Yet, he received the Eagles head coaching gig.

Andy Reid has said publicly that Bieniemy deserves to be a head coach. Most recently, former Chiefs quarterback and current Washington Football Team signal caller Alex Smith said it’s “ridiculous [Bieniemy] hasn’t been hired yet.”

Bieniemy’s last chance of getting a job this cycle is with the Texans. However, this is a team that initially didn’t request to interview him. But with Watson being displeased with the organization, the Texans received special permission to speak with him on Monday. Even multiple anonymous Texans players told FanSided they are pleading with the team to hire Bieniemy.

Yet, the decision comes down to owner Cal McNair and general manager Nick Caserio, and it’s unknown if they’ll lean in that direction.

Even with all of this talk going on, Bieniemy isn’t letting it bother him. He’s focused on ensuring the Chiefs make it to the Super Bowl for the second-consecutive season.
