After hosting free-agent quarterback Dwayne Haskins for a visit on Thursday, the Pittsburgh Steelers will now sign the former first-round pick.

Things surely moved fast between the Pittsburgh Steelers and quarterback Dwayne Haskins. On Thursday morning, it was reported that the AFC North powerhouse was bringing in Haskins for a visit to meet with the front office and head coach Mike Tomlin.

Now, the two sides have wasted no time in takings things a step further, with Haskins now signing a new deal with the team. Just like that, the former Ohio State superstar and first-round pick is getting his second chance after being released by the Washington Football Team.

Dwayne Haskins has agreed to a new deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers

It goes without saying, but Haskins’ career with Washington never took off and he was a major disappointment. Washington used its No. 15 overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft on Haskins, as he was pegged to be the signal-caller of the future. That wasn’t the case, as he went on to start 13 games for the team, finishing with 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.

In late December, shortly after Haskins started against the Seattle Seahawks, Washington announced that it was releasing the second-year quarterback. Now, Haskins will look to take advantage of his new NFL opportunity, this time suiting up for Tomlin and the Steelers.

It remains up in the air if Ben Roethlisberger will return for another season or retire. If Roethlisberger does hang up his cleats, Haskins will have the chance to compete for the starting job. If Roethlisberger does return, he could serve as a great mentor for Haskins in Pittsburgh, as he’s getting ready to begin his third season in the NFL.

This appears to be a low-risk move by the Pittsburgh front office. Only time will tell how it ends up panning out for them.

Next. Dwayne Haskins would be a worthy flier for Pittsburgh Steelers. dark
