The New York Jets should really avoid signing these three free agents.

It will be a busy offseason for the New York Jets, who have hired head coach Robert Saleh and could be busy wheeling and dealing in free agency. General manager Joe Douglas has a ton of draft capital and can easily create over $70 million in salary cap space to address the many needs the Jets have.

Having cap space is one thing and spending it wisely is another as Jets fans are well aware of after watching former general manager Mike Maccagnan continually whiff on big free agent deals like the ones New York gave to Le’Veon Bell and Trumaine Johnson. Let’s take a look at three free agents the Jets should avoid giving the big money to, including Washington guard Brandon Scherff.

3. Free agents the Jets should avoid – G Brandon Scherff

There’s no doubt that the Jets need help along the offensive line and Scherff is one of the top linemen projected to reach the market. Washington kept Scherff with the franchise tag a year ago and is a four-time Pro Bowler, but if he reaches the market this time the Jets should look elsewhere due to Scherff’s extensive injury history.

Scherff hasn’t played 16 games in a season since 2016, missing a combined 16 games over the past three years. That is the equivalent of missing an entire season due to injury, which could become a more frequent occurrence as Scherff will turn 30 in December.

The Jets can still bolster their offensive line by signing other free agents like Joe Thuney or drafting a guard like Wyatt Davis in the second round. Spending big bucks on a player with a questionable injury history is not the wisest way to address that need.
