Dan Haren has a hilarious response to Curt Schilling’s HOF statement

Dan Haren took it upon himself to mock Curt Schilling after the latter declared he wants to be removed from the Hall of Fame ballot.

The 2021 Baseball Hall of Fame class was set to be announced Tuesday. That is, until the results were revealed and not one player reached the threshold for enshrinement.

Curt Schilling had the most votes of any player but still came up short in his ninth year on the ballot. That means he has one year remaining. However, Schilling sent a letter declaring he wishes to be removed from consideration in 2022.

There is plenty of controversy surrounding Schilling away from the baseball diamond, and whether that should affect his Hall of Fame chances is a long debate. Some people are just having fun with his statement, and that includes former All-Star pitcher Dan Haren.

Haren is a three-time All-Star who pitched from 2003-15. 2021 was his first year on the ballot and he got a grand total of zero votes, removing him from next year’s ballot.

There have also been complaints and problems when it comes to the writers determining who gets into the Hall of Fame. That is why Schilling made it clear he would prefer to solely be under consideration by the Veterans Committee. That group is made up of Hall-of-Famers and he sees it as more fair and reasonable than the writers currently snubbing him.

Schilling’s note is just odd because he only has one more year remaining on the ballot. He must be convinced he has no shot and wants to avoid any further stress or embarrassment. Leaving it up to the Veterans Committee should ultimately get him in sooner than later.

But his gripes aren’t going unnoticed and Haren has jumped on the bandwagon, albeit jokingly, of those who will remove themselves before they end up missing out on getting votes anyway.  You can’t get fired if you quit first, and Haren has found some humor amid a contentious situation.
