The Boston Red Sox are still in rebuilding mode. Some former players would help make this a competitive season.

The Red Sox have fallen off a cliff since winning the 2018 World Series. Thanks to a combination of major injuries, the Mookie Betts trade, important players falling off, and losing their manager to the Houston Astros cheating scandal, it’s been a very rough two years for the Red Sox. This year doesn’t look like it’s going to be much better.

The Sox haven’t done much to upgrade a roster that finished in last place in the AL East last season. Yet, it’s still a pitching staff that will likely be led by Nathan Eovaldi with Chris Sale missing the first part of the season after Tommy John Surgery.

There’s no doubt the Red Sox need more contributors on this roster. The starting pitching finished 13th in the American League last season. The bullpen finished the season 14th in the league in ERA. It’s not like the offense was anything to feel confident in.

Maybe this is all part of the Red Sox’s plan. They brought back Alex Cora to be their manager. Their “big” free agent signing to this point is Kiké Hernandez. They got former Yankees minor leaguer pitcher Garrett Whitlock in the Rule 5 Draft, and traded for Adam Ottavino. That’s about it, although they could make moves before Spring Training starts. There are some former players who could really make a difference on this team.
