If there’s one thing the Packers can take from this offseason, it’s that Mike Pettine won’t be back.

The Packers defense was humiliated for the second straight postseason, this time by Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. While the Packers were able to notch a couple of turnovers against Brady, the first half-ending prayer from Bruce Arians and Co. should never have occurred in the first place, and is a fireable offense in itself. Add in the Packers horrible performance in the NFC Championship last year against the 49ers rushing attack, and Pettine’s time is clearly up.

Pettine was a holdover from pre-Matt LaFleur days, so he’ll get to hire his own defensive coordinator in what will be a big test for the young head coach. Should the Packers wish to get to the next level in Aaron Rodgers’ final years, they need a capable mind leading the opposite side of the football.

The decision to let Pettine go wasn’t a difficult one

Pettine was on the final year of his contract, which ran out after the loss to the Bucs. If there was any performance to fully sum up his tenure as defensive coordinator, it was that one, and both sides clearly knew it was time to move on.

The veteran DC didn’t wish to renew his contract at the end of last season as to make sure the Packers were the right fit moving forward. After another year that ended just one game short of Super Bowl glory, the Packers must think Pettine is among the weak links on this coaching staff and roster.
