Virginia hits the road to take on in-state rival Virginia Tech in a big ACC clash.

The battle for ACC supremacy will take an interesting turn this week as a big matchup is set for Saturday in Blacksburg. No. 8 Virginia will hit the road to take on No. 20 Virginia Tech for an in-state showdown between two of the top three teams in the conference.

Few should be surprised that the Cavaliers are sitting on top of the heap with an 11-2 record that includes a perfect 7-0 mark in ACC play. Many experts pegged Virginia as a team that would be battling it out for a top seed in the NCAA Tournament and aside from a bad outing against Gonzaga (which pretty much anyone who plays the Bulldogs has experienced), everything has gone according to plan for the Cavaliers.

Tony Bennett’s team has played its traditionally rugged Pack Line defense, holding opponents to just 59.5 points per game, but the Cavaliers’ offense has been more productive. The big key has been the impact of former Marquette product Sam Hauser, who is averaging 15 points per game and 7.4 rebounds a night to lead the team in both categories.

The bigger surprise here is the Hokies, who pulled off a stunning upset over Villanova in the Mohegan Sun bubble and have rode the momentum from that win into a tremendous season. There is a bit of upheaval for Virginia Tech after starting guard Tyrece Radford was placed on an indefinite suspension for a nebulous violation of team rules.

The loss of Radford could be enormous for this game since he is one of the Hokies’ biggest playmakers. That could prove problematic as Virginia Tech will need to find another way to penetrate the Pack Line defense.
