Jameis Winston may be the next NFL quarterback domino to fall. Multiple teams are interested in stealing him away from the Saints in free agency.

Matthew Stafford’s trade to the Rams won’t be the last quarterback transaction to shake up the NFL this offseason. In fact, his move is encouraging teams to speed up their plans to address the most important position in the game. Jameis Winston could easily become the next signal-caller to change uniforms.

Several teams interested in acquiring Stafford are immediately turning their attention towards the former Saints’ backup. New Orleans would like to bring him back to provide depth behind Taysom Hill next season, but several other coaching staffs see him as a potential starter. In particular, the Colts and Bears are both being linked with Winston in free agency.

Winston deserves a chance to start again

Indianapolis might seem like an awkward philosophical landing spot for Winston, but Philip Rivers’ decision to retire has the franchise scrambling. They view Winston’s big arm as something they can mold into a valuable asset for a roster that’s ready to be an immediate Super Bowl contender.

The Bears look increasingly likely to bring in a new quarterback to rescue them from last year’s underwhelming duo of Mitchell Trubisky and Nick Foles. Trubisky seems headed for free agency given Chicago’s lack of interest in continuing to pay him big money. Foles may stick on the roster but Matt Nagy has lost faith in the former Super Bowl winner.

It would be intriguing to see what Nagy could do with a quarterback with Winston’s physical gifts. He lacks the mobility that’s helped Trubisky overcome his passing issues, but he would instantly become the most talented thrower Nagy’s ever worked with in Chicago. The key with Winston, of course, is coaching turnovers out of his game to allow that arm talent to shine through.

Ultimately, the interest in Winston on the open market proves that NFL coaches are always willing to be on their own ability to fix a talented player’s tragic flaw. Winston seems destined to receive another chance to become a starter in 2021.
