Michigan State will look to get back on track as they take on the Hawkeyes.

In a rough year for blue bloods, Michigan State has quietly slipped into a seriously troubling spot. The Spartans returned from a COVID pause last week and were blown out twice, dropping Tom Izzo’s team to 2-6 in Big Ten play.

Sunday’s loss at Ohio State was particularly troubling because Michigan State’s defensive struggles continued in a pronounced way. The Buckeyes knocked down over 45 percent of their field-goal attempts and dealt another tough loss to Michigan State.

The losses haven’t been troubling on an individual basis for the Spartans but there are simply too many of them at this point. A win over Duke has also lost its luster, meaning that Michigan State is nowhere near the bubble right now as they hit the road to take on Iowa.

The Hawkeyes also enter this matchup on a losing streak after falling at Illinois over the weekend. Luka Garza only put up 19 points as Iowa couldn’t contain the Illinois backcourt, with Trent Frazier and Ayo Dosunmu combining for 29 points in the game.

This matchup was originally supposed to occur in mid-January but was postponed due to the COVID outbreak the Spartans endured. The delay won’t prove much of a help for Michigan State since they aren’t particularly deep down low, which is problematic when slowing down Garza is the best way to beat the Hawkeyes.

With few marquee win opportunities left this game is much more important for the Spartans than it is for Iowa. Getting a win here would make the road forward much easier if Izzo wants to avoid missing the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1997.
